John Dory's is committed to sustainable business practice through our Eco Voyage sustainability programme. In collaboration with John Dory's franchisees and partners, we are making a concerted effort to ensure our Environmental Sustainability Policy is a living reality in our restaurants.
We are focusing on the bottom line 'People and Planet' as the central message of our policy, with specific attention to Energy Reduction and Saving.
Our partnership with the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) & South African Sustainable Seafood Initiative (SASSI) is central to our commitment to managing our precious ocean resources. Through this collaboration, we have already taken major steps towards reviving the state of our fish stocks through support for sustainable fishing practice.
“As a seafood restaurant, our business is reliant on this fragile resource, therefore we will continue to drive the strategy of procuring products that are sustainably sourced and managed," says Joe Stead, Environmental Sustainability manager, Spur Corporation.

The story of Nando’s starts hundreds of years ago with the first Portuguese explorers who set sail for the East in search of the legendary spice route. And so they landed on our shores and discovered the African Bird’s Eye Chilli or as we know it (and love it), PERi-PERi. Today, many years later, you can find Nando’s restaurants, our delicious, addictive sauces and our world-famous grocery range around the globe.
PERi-PERi is the heart and soul of Nando’s. Its story is our story. For centuries the people of Southeast Africa have used PERi-PERi to bring fire to their food. It is in Mozambique’s rich soil and blistering sunshine that the African Bird’s Eye Chilli grows into its fiery best. When Portuguese explorers arrived there, they were enchanted by its flavour. They added a squeeze of lemon and a kick of garlic and turned PERi-PERi into a very well-travelled spice. Which is how, many years later it ended up in Rosettenville, Johannesburg.
One afternoon in 1987, two friends went for lunch at a humble Portuguese eatery. As their meal drew to a close, they knew they’d tasted something that had to be shared. PERi-PERi was about to make one more journey – from Rosettenville to the world.
When you say howzit, heita or hello at a Nando’s, the one thing you’re guaranteed to find, besides our legendary chicken, is a warm South African welcome and a smile to make you feel at home.
Each one of our restaurants has its own unique design, but they all have earthy textures and colours that remind us of our sunny Afro-Portuguese roots and feature original, local South African art and unique design touches that make it the perfect place to sit down and enjoy the best food you’ve ever tasted.
Afro-Luso beats and friendly service add to the vibe, and then there’s the secret ingredient – our flame-grilled PERi-PERi chicken.
We’ve set the eating experience on fire and we can’t wait for you to join our table because if there’s one thing we love as much as PERi-PERi, it’s lots of people to enjoy it with!
We’ve been around for nearly 40 years – long enough to have developed a rich heritage and a solid understanding of the private healthcare industry in South Africa. So our team of experts is always looking at innovative ways to ensure our members get affordable, quality healthcare, whether it’s keeping our fingers on the pulse of technology, managing your care so lifestyle diseases are identified before they become chronic, or negotiating better rates for you. If you are one of our 730 000 beneficiaries, then you will know we are always on your side – negotiating for better rates and sourcing reputable service providers to help keep you healthy and limit rising healthcare costs.
We don’t believe in one-size-fits-all, so our wide range of plans ensure that you and your family will find a snug fit for your particular needs. We also believe there is beauty in simplicity and have made our plans easy-to-understand and use while helping to stretch your benefits as far as possible. Whether you are a go-getting entrepreneur, a CEO, newly-weds, a couple with a new family, facing retirement, or a minimum wage earner who needs peace of mind when it comes to healthcare, Bonitas is there for you.
And yes size does matter – we have financial stability, strong key indicators of fiscal health and reserves of over R6 billion. So you know we have you covered.

About Bastion
THE NAME CHANGE AND REBRAND
We have a proud history and track record and our name change in no way reflects a distancing of our past. We embarked on quite a lengthy period of self-reflection and deliberation and we felt we had to recalibrate, re-align ourselves, so to speak, to the changes in the market and changes in the market environment. Part of this process brought to light that we needed to align everything we do to the “why” of what we stand for. Many companies know how to do business, but research has shown that many don’t know why they do business.
WHY WE DO IT:
The History
With more than 50 years' experience, Bastion is your foundation for growth.
The beginning (1967-1977)
Grasland Ondernemings (Pty) Ltd was registered on the 23rd of November 1967 and shortly thereafter the subsidiary Oos-Transvaal Kalkverskaffers (Pty) Ltd (OTKV) was bought and the first operating lime deposits were part of the Group. In the early days the Group was based in Bothaville and was called Grasland Saad en Kunsmis.
Five agricultural cooperatives were the founding members when the Group was combined, namely Kroonstad Wes Koöperasie, Sentraal Wes Koöperasie, Oos Transvaal Koöperasie, Noord Wes Koöperasie and Vrystaat Koöperasie.
In 1974 Piet Prinsloo was appointed as General Manager of the Group where two operating entities sold agricultural lime, Buhrmansdrif near Mahikeng and Immerpan near Modimolle. Agricultural lime during this time traded commercially for R1.80 per ton in bulk and R3.25 per ton bagged.
New lime sources and expansion (1978 – 1997)
1998 – 2017
A new dawn (2018)
Incorporated in 1918 and listed on the Johannesburg (JSE) and Namibian (NSX) stock exchanges, Oceana Group is a global fishing company, and an important participant in the South African, Namibian and US fishing industries. We are ranked as one of the top 20 seafood companies in the world by market capitalisation. We employ 4 845 people globally, of whom 3 736 are directly employed and 1 109 are indirectly employed. Oceana is a black-owned company and a level 1 B-BBEE contributor.
“On the surface a fishing company. Deep down, so much more.”
Over the past 5 years, Oceana has consistently been rated as one of the most empowered JSE-listed companies (Empowerdex Most Empowered Companies ranking).
Our core business is the catching, processing, marketing and distribution of canned fish, fishmeal, fish oil, lobster, horse mackerel, squid and hake. The business includes mid-water fishing (horse mackerel), deep-sea trawling (hake), and inshore fishing for pelagic fish (anchovy, Gulf Menhaden, redeye herring and pilchard). In addition, we provide refrigerated warehouse facilities and logistical support services.
“We supply fish and fish products to consumers across the spectrum – in Africa, Asia, Europe, the US, Australia and the Far East.”
The group’s principal market is the lower-end consumer (who prefers canned fish and horse mackerel). Oceana is particularly well renowned for the sale of canned pilchards under the Lucky Star label. Lucky Star is an iconic retail brand in South Africa, and leads the market within the canned fish sectors in which it operates. This includes Botswana, France, Kenya, Lesotho, Mozambique, Malawi, Mauritius, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, the United Kingdom, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
We also sell products to upper-end consumers (who are predominantly buyers of lobster, hake and certain canned fish).
The majority of our sales revenue comes from South Africa and Namibia, followed by markets in Southern and West Africa, the US, Europe, Australia and the Far East. The consolidation of Oceana’s South African, Namibian, Angolan and US fishmeal supply has increased the group’s scale and mobility in the global market. This is supported by increasing global protein requirements and growing demand for fishmeal and fish oil products. Oceana’s fishmeal and fish oil market has a global footprint. The group’s US‑based, Daybrook Fisheries operation is responsible for a significant portion of our fishmeal and fish oil products.
Oceana’s fishing and production‑related activities are conducted primarily through four operating divisions: Lucky Star; Daybrook Fisheries; Blue Continent Products; and Oceana Lobster.
A fifth division, CCS Logistics, provides refrigerated warehouse facilities with operations in South Africa, Namibia and Angola. This structure creates value through economies of scale and efficiencies in terms of raw material and product volumes, use of vessels and production resources, market focus, risk management and growth opportunities.
