Foskor - Head Office
Foskor (Pty) Ltd
Foskor is a producer and distributor of phosphate rock, phosphate-based fertilisers, sulphuric acid, phosphoric acid and magnetite locally and internationally.
We are based in South Africa. and employ a total of 1 654 people spread across the Phalaborwa Mining Division, the Richards Bay Acid Division and the head office in Midrand.
WHAT WE PRODUCEWe mine phosphate rock in Phalaborwa and transfer it by rail to our Richards Bay facility, where we use it to produce phosphoric acid and granular fertilisers – MAP (monoammonium phosphates). We also produce sulphuric acid, which is used in the production of phosphoric acid, and we sell excess sulphuric acid that becomes available. Foskor also has magnetite, a by-product of phosphate rock beneficiation which was mined in the past and stored in a stockpile. Currently, there is no magnetite mined in the process.
OUR MARKETSWe are the leading domestic producer and supplier of phosphate-based products (phosphate rock, phosphoric acid and mono ammonium phosphate. Beyond serving the local market and SADC regional markets (DRC, eSwatini, Zimbabwe, Zambia etc) we supply phosphoric acid and mono ammonium phosphate to international markets, particularly India, the world’s largest market of phosphate products. We also supply phosphoric acid to other international markets (Brazil, Bangladesh, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Belgium and France). While the bulk of our phosphate rock concentrate is used in our phosphoric acid manufacturing plant, we also exportavailable products to international markets (Belgium, Netherlands, Norway, Lithuania, New Zealand and Japan).
At a Glance
Foskor was founded by the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) in 1951 to produce phosphates for South Africa’s agricultural sector, and is the only vertically integrated producer of phosphate ore, phosphoric acid and granular fertiliser in South Africa.
The Group’s core activities are the mining of phosphate rock and the production of phosphoric acid and phosphate-based fertilisers. Foskor mines and beneficiates phosphate rock at Phalaborwa in South Africa’s Limpopo Province, from there it is carried by rail to the production facility in Richards Bay in KwaZulu-Natal.
Foskor is the leading South African supplier of granular fertilisers, the core ingredient in nitrogen, phosphate and potassium fertiliser products known as NPKs. It is also a commercial producer of phosphoric and sulphuric acids and magnetite (a by-product of the phosphate beneficiation process), which are sold both locally and abroad.
Acid Plant
Situated in Richard's Bay
The Acid Division has three sulphuric acid plants, two streams of phosphoric acid plants and a granulation plant to make granular fertiliser products. Raw materials used in Richards Bay are phosphate rock which is produced atour Mining Division and transported to the Acid Division via rail and Sulphur which is converted into sulphuric acid in the Sulphuric Acid Plant is imported via the port of Richards Bay. Sulphuric Acid is transferred to the Phosphoric Acid Plant where it is used to digest the phosphate rock to convert it into Phosphoric Acid. The waste heat resulting from Sulphur
combustion and conversion is used to produce steam which is used for concentrating the Phosphoric Acid into Merchant Grade Acid. The phosphoric acid is either exported in its acid
form, sold locally, or used in the production of granular fertiliser at Foskor. Granular fertiliser is mainly sold locally.

Mining
Situated in Phalaborwa
The Mining Division mines apatite, a phosphate- bearing mineral, at its two open-cast mines and produces sufficient quantities of rock to feed Foskor’s phosphoric acid plant at the Acid Division in Richards Bay, supply other local clients and export excess product to international clients.
